NY BOXING group was established by professional Heavyweight boxer Shannon Miller and his brother amateur boxer Shawn Miller to teach everyday people how to train and fight like professionals. Where NY BOXING differs from all of the other local boxing gyms is that NY BOXING'S classes are taught by actual Boxers who have had boxing matches, not just thought about it or watched it on TV. NY BOXING'S goals are simple: to teach our clients how to throw and avoid punches correctly, and to condition and train them like real fighters do prior to a fight. 7
Shannon and Shawn grew up in the boxing business. For over twenty years, their father Bob Miller, owned and operated the Uncle Sam's Boxing club in Troy. Their mother Lorraine Miller was Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson's first promoter and promoted about 15 of Mike's first fights. Over the years both Bob and Lorraine have helped numerous local fighters reach the top of the sport. Still today, Bob works with a number of world champions and can be seen monthly on national television.
The name Shannon Miller may be recognizable to you. Shannon has fought many fights both locally and nationally. His fight in 2005 was awarded the ESPN fight of the year status. Shannon has also fought for the NY state heavyweight title at Madison Square Garden. Shannon has appeared a number of times on national TV in many of his fights. His ESPN fight also can be seen monthly on ESPN Classic sports network.
Shawn Miller is a 2005 graduate of West Virginia University and was one of the school's top pitchers while there. Prior to attending W.V.U., Shawn attended Hudson Valley Community College, where he played football and continues to hold many records as a wide receiver. He was named player of the year in the conference while there. Shawn is an undefeated amateur boxer. In his last fight he went to Bermuda to take on the Bermudian National champion in the heavyweight division. Shawn took the title winning by a first round knockout!
NY BOXING group offers over sixty adult classes monthly. We also offer 2 youth classes a week. Classes usually have two or three instructors and clients are instructed on working on the heavy bag, speed bag, double end bag, jumping rope and each client gets individual interaction with instructors via one on one hand pad work. Each class also includes an extensive exercise routine which includes such things as push-ups, sit-ups, pull throughs and leg lifts to work abs and to help in building and conditioning muscle.
NY Boxing also offers a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu program which is led by Ryan Clark. Ryan is currently a purple belt under Steve Kardian (Black belt from Phil Migliarese) and Rob Kahn (Black belt from Legendary UFC Fighter Royce Gracie) Ryan Spent his college years training at the first Gracie Academy in the Northeast which was established in 1994. At the academy Ryan was exposed to the proper way of teaching Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at seminars put on by Erik Paulson, Phil Migliarese, Royler Gracie and even Royce Gracie. In order to stay on top of his game Ryan frequently heads back to his roots and trains with top level black belts, something that most people do not have the privelege of doing. The Jiu-jitsu classes are held 3 days a week where the basis is to work on submission grappling ground combat skills. The program also features a combination program of hand striking and Jiu-jitsu in a blended Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) program. The part of the program featuring the stand up striking portion is taught by Shannon Miller and the ground style is taught by Ryan. This is a very unique program and is the only one in the area teaching this blended realistic fighting style.
